District 11 Notes: Week 3

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 by The Press in Sports

Liberty's KJ Williams caught three TD passes against Nazareth to become the all-time school leader in TD catches. Williams now has 17 for his career, breaking Joe Donaher's record of 15 TD catches set from 1965-67. Williams now has 1,046 yards receiving in his career to become the fifth Hurricane to accomplish that.

Freshman QB Doug Erney of Liberty completed 10 passes for 161 yards and four TDs in his first varsity action. The four TDs ties the school record held jointly by John...

Hawks survive close one

Bethlehem Catholic's tennis team survived a close match with Emmaus last week, defeating the Hornets, 4-3.

"We get pretty excited [about Emmaus] every year because it's a bigger school, and they're always tough for us," said Allison Barczynski, the Hawks' number three singles player.

Barczynski won the only three-set match of the day, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

"There was a lot of pressure to win because Mara [Blanchard] lost, and I wasn't sure what the doubles would do," Barczynski...

Canes lose a shootout

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

It shouldn't have been a surprise to see Liberty and Nazareth go into a scoring shootout last week at Frank Banko Field.

But what may have been surprising was the play of freshman quarterback Doug Erney.

Liberty lost a thrilling 49-42 contest and there is no room for consolation prizes in sports, but Erney filled in quite admirably for injured senior QB Derek Byrd.

Erney went 10 of 17 for 158 yards and four touchdowns with K.J. Williams being an unstoppable force in the...

Last week's rank: #1

Of all the teams in the league, Easton always seems to not have a hard time so far this year....

Pates get victory over Liberty

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

It's been awhile.

Last Tuesday, in a much looked forward to soccer match between Freedom and Liberty, it was the Patriots who came out on top, shutting out the Hurricanes 3-0 under the lights at BASD Stadium for the first time in several years.

"It just feels great. We just did what we usually do- technical stuff," said Baidy Ba, who scored the third goal for the Patriots with 11:11 left in the game.

Freshman, Stephan Gaber scored the other two goals, one in the first...

Bethlehem Catholic's cross country team traveled to Whitehall last week to open the regular season.

Three of Becahi's girls placed in the top 20, despite losing to Parkland, 15-48, and Whitehall, 28-30.

Kassi Yocco finished in sixth place, Olivia Zemanek finished in 14th place, and Cecelia Zemanek finished in 16th for the Hawks.

"The start was a slight hill, but the hills kept getting steeper and steeper," said Olivia Zemanek. "I ran with Cecelia the whole time."

Hawks still searching

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

There is no panic button in Joe Henrich's repertoire. The resurgence of Bethlehem Catholic's football program was never going to be an overnight venture, so as 2012 has kicked off another season of football, the Hawks (0-3) are still waiting for their first victory of the young season.

Becahi suffered a 48-14 setback at Easton last week, but that isn't the focus of Henrich's scope at the moment.

Improvement is the focal point for Becahi.

"I don't feel like we're...

LHS feels good

It's only taken two years, but Liberty's volleyball team has taken off under head coach Missy Lynn's direction. In year two of running the program, Lynn has the Hurricanes off to a stellar start at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in Lehigh Valley Conference play.

Now they hope to keep their winning momentum going forward this week with matches against Parkland on Tuesday and Allen on Thursday, as Liberty looks to keep pace with division and league leaders Bethlehem Catholic (5-1, 4-0).

Tough road ahead

Thursday, September 20, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

Consistency is the key to many aspects of success in life and that's something Jason Roeder is looking for from his Freedom football team at the moment.

The Pates fell to 1-2 on the season following last Friday's 42-21 loss at Whitehall.

One thing that will be consistent for Roeder and company in the future is facing difficult opposition the next three weeks, starting with this Friday's home tilt against an undefeated Emmaus (3-0) team.

"They've only given up seven...
