Patriots fall in a heartbreaker

Tuesday, March 12, 2013 by JEFF MOELLER Special to the Press in Sports

All season, Freedom's boys' basketball team has had their share of close games. In fact, they lost six games by seven points or less while winning their share of tight games.

In their opening round PIAA state playoff game at Allen Saturday afternoon, the Patriots fell on the short end of the equation when they suffered a 47-45 last-second defeat to Upper Darby, ruining their chances to win a state tournament game for the first time in 31 years.

Hawks rally to knock off Spartans

Tuesday, March 5, 2013 by KATIE MCONDALD in Sports

As Bethlehem Catholic guard, Nicole Lacherza, sank the first of two free throws in the final seconds of the District XI Class 3A final against Southern Lehigh on Saturday, a full-blown smile came across Becahi coach Bill Lanscek's face.

It was a long time coming, considering there was no guaranteed Becahi victory until that very moment. In fact, the Hawks trailed for most of the game by as many as nine points, but a true team effort clinched a 50-44 win over the Spartans and a...

Freedom swimmers Carly DelFranco, Helen Hsu, Brooke Munion, and Shannon Howell took first place in the 200 medley relay in 1:48.70 at the District XI Swimming Championships last weekend, and that was only the beginning for the Patriots.

In individual events, Hsu won the 100 free in 51.91.

Freedom coach Reik Foust said, "It was her mind-blowing speed. It's always impressive to win a district event, and she also broke a school record. In the medley relay, she had the second...

Patriots downed by Parkland in 4A finals

Tuesday, March 5, 2013 by TODD KRESS Special to the Press in Sports

Freedom head coach Joe Stellato and the Patriots envisioned Saturday's District 11 4A boys championship game against Parkland differently than how it actually panned out.

The Patriots, who trailed by 12 going into halftime, saw their deficit grow to as much as 22 in the third quarter of their 65-50 defeat to the Trojans over the weekend.

"I don't know what to say," said Stellato. "We just didn't get it tonight. It was their night."

It was obviously disappointing. We all...

Four Bethlehem wrestlers advanced from last week's Northeast Regional 3A tournament to Hershey for tomorrow's opening round of the PIAA championships.

For the likes of Liberty's Grimaldi Gonzalez and Freedom's Evan Kauffman, they'll be marching to Hershey with gold medals around their neck.

The seniors cranked out titles at their respective weights in consecutive weeks and will also be joined by Liberty's Jake Gunning (220) and Freedom's Jake Young (170).

Vikes use big second half

Tuesday, March 5, 2013 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

Edward Hudak grabbed a rebound and quickly sank a five foot shot that just beat the buzzer to end the first half.

Bethlehem Catholic (13-11) went into the locker room only down by two, and now riding some momentum. But Allentown Central Catholic (23-3) came out fast and used a 49 point second-half to cruise past the Golden Hawks 89-61 and win the District 11 3A championship last Friday night at Easton Area Middle School.

"A couple of things didn't go our way," said head coach...

State playoffs begin on Saturday

Tuesday, March 5, 2013 by PETER CAR in Sports

Bethlehem may have had a heavy contingent in the boys' basketball playoff scene, but the city came away empty-handed over the weekend when Freedom and Bethlehem Catholic both fell in the 4A and 3A finals.

Freedom was outgunned by Parkland in a 65-50 contest on Saturday night, while Becahi was overwhelmed by Central Catholic 87-61 on Friday.

Both move on to the state playoffs this weekend, but the one team that has had the most experience at the state level of any local team...

Hawks cruise to another District 11 title

Tuesday, February 26, 2013 by ROD HECKMAN in Sports

For Bethlehem Catholic to crown nine champions in last weekend's District 11 2A tournament may not be a surprise to many.

After all, the Golden Hawks boast a star-studded lineup top to bottom that recently just earned its third straight PIAA title.

What some people forget, though, is this team isn't made up of just talented upperclassmen that are used to performing on the big stage.

Included on the squad are freshmen who have never participated under the bright lights of...
