Pates grind through tough loss

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

With any type of loss, there's always a lesson to be learned and Freedom's basketball team took a valuable experience from their setback to Easton last Friday night.

Closing out games and finishing contests that you can win are always important steps towards becoming an elite team and the Patriots (3-1) are certainly aware of that following a 47-45 overtime loss to the Rovers (3-0).

"We had a chance in overtime to close out the game and we didn't," said head coach Joe Stellato...

'Canes enter big week

Wednesday, December 19, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

With only two games under their belts heading into this week, Liberty's boys' basketball team had a slow start to December.

That all changes this week, as the Hurricanes (2-0) have a three-game slate the week before Christmas, none of which are easy contests.

Starting with last night's contest against Easton, followed by tonight's home tilt against Stroudsburg, the 'Canes have a busy two-night stretch.

Then they close out the week with everyone's favorite basketball...

Becahi girls get win

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's girls basketball team was too hot to handle for Whitehall in the Hawks 48-31 victory over the Zephyrs at the Yasso-Rothrock Tournament on Saturday.

Although the Zephyrs took the early lead, a three-pointer by Becahi freshman, Nia Mims, sparked the Hawks offense toward the end of the first quarter.

Soon after, the Hawks pulled away when Becahi guard, Nicole Lacherza, hit a three of her own, breaking a 12-12 tie at the beginning of the second quarter.

Dave Brown was relieved of his duties last week as head coach of the football program at Liberty and now the Hurricanes are looking for their second head coach following the Tim Moncman era.

Brown, who took over for Moncman three years ago, tallied an 18-16 record during his tenure, including a 3-7 record this past season after the team started 0-6.

After entering this season with the job of filling 19 starter positions because of graduation, Brown had mixed emotions about...

Pates top Parkland

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

The energy inside Freedom High School's gymnasium last Saturday night had the feel of a District final, but it was only game one of the season for the Freedom Patriots and the Parkland Trojans.

Freedom was fueled by the surrounding environment, and used 21 first quarter points on their way to an opening win of the season, defeating Parkland 54-47 in the finale of the Yasso Christmas City Classic.

These two teams never seem to disappoint. They met in the League and District 11...

Hurricane boys blow out Dieruff

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

The last time Liberty played Dieruff, it was in summer league action and the Huskies ousted the Hurricanes from the Cedar Beach league.

Last Saturday night, however, was a different story.

Liberty overcame an early first quarter deficit and went on to route Dieruff 73-39 in the Yasso-Rothrock Christmas City Classic at Memorial Gymnasium.

Nine different Hurricanes scored on the night, led by DeShawn Oyeniyi's 17 points.

Joey Torres and Greg Noack also posted double...

While Liberty will only have two male divers, Bryan Rivera and Alex Caccamo, two female divers will compete for the boys, as allowed by PIAA rules.

FHS cheerleaders compete in Philly

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

The Freedom Patriots participated in their first competition of the season at the Cheersport Philly Grand Competition on Saturday at Villanova University.

"Overall, we did a really good job. We lost 17 seniors, so we had a lot to compensate for. Our performance was a lot better than we thought," said Freedom co-captain, Sarah Callahan.

The Patriots' routine started with standing tumbling, a jump sequence, more standing tumbling, and stunts.

"Our jump sequence is pretty...

New FHS swimming coach has familiar name

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

There must be something in the water at the Foust household, as Freedom High School has announced that Reik Foust has been appointed the new head swim coach for the Patriots, while his father, also Reik, is entering his ninth season as head swim coach for the Liberty Hurricanes.

The younger Foust, a 2004 graduate of Liberty High School and a 2010 graduate of Catholic University of America, has been a part of the swimming world for almost as long as he can remember.

"Since I was...
