'Canes, Pates set for weekend battle

Friday, November 2, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

Not sure if it's fitting that a hurricane is coming through the week of the Liberty-Freedom football game, but both teams certainly are looking forward to getting past Hurricane Sandy to prepare for their own little football storm inside Frank Banko Field this Saturday afternoon.

The Pates (4-5) and Hurricanes (2-7) will kickoff at 1 p.m. Saturday and it's a contest that both sides are pumped for after each receiving wins in week nine of the regular season.

Todora will continue career at Bloomsburg

Friday, November 2, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

If there's one thing that Bethlehem Catholic's Ryan Todora wanted to get out of the way before wrestling season, it's having college destination figured out.

Todora, a senior at Becahi, verbally committed to Bloomsburg last week to give head coach Jeff Karam his second Division-I wrestler on the roster.

Senior Darian Cruz committed to Lehigh in August and Todora followed a similar path to finalizing his collegiate path before the season kicks off in two weeks.

Freedom cross country runner, Shaina Palmer, won a trip to the PIAA State Meet after taking sixth place at the District XI Class AAA Cross Country Championships last week at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course.

"I tried to start out strong but not too hard. I didn't really notice the hills, actually. I didn't go up as fast, but I kept my speed up to get over them. I just gave it as much as I had," Palmer said.

Palmer finished the race in 20:06.

Hurricanes fall to Emmaus

Friday, November 2, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

While Liberty celebrated its district playoff victory in the middle of the soccer field at BASD Stadium, Freedom coaches maneuvered their way through the Hurricanes to lift the heartbroken Patriots to their feet after their 1-0 loss last Wednesday night.

In the first round of District XI Class AAA playoffs, the archrivals would meet for the third time this season. Freedom won the first match in September, and both teams played to a 1-1 tie earlier this month, but this time, it was...

Hawks sweep LHS, FHS; clinch D-11 playoff spot

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by KATIE MCDONALD in Sports

Bethlehem Catholic's girls soccer team scored a 5-0 victory over Freedom last week, and for the first time in several years, beat both the Patriots and Liberty twice in the same season. They also clinched a District 11 playoff berth Monday afternoon.

"We like to win against people in our own city," said Becahi forward, Brighde Foley.

Foley scored two goals against the Patriots, Mackenzie Bento scored two goals, and Abby Guman scored one.

Foley's first goal came in the...

Hawks to face Trojans

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

When you're sitting with a 1-6 record in mid-October, you have more problems to deal with other than X's and O's. That's exactly the dilemma Joe Henrich is dealing with as Bethlehem Catholic's football team suffered through another defeat last week at the hands of Nazareth during a 30-0 loss.

With Parkland (5-2) on the agenda this week for the Hawks, facing the hottest team in the district isn't what the doctor ordered, but it's what the Hawks have to deal with.

"We're not in a...

Parkland rolls

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by CJ HEMERLY Special to the Press in Sports

The Freedom football team ran into the wrong team at the wrong time. Parkland (5-2 overall, 5-1 LVC) came in winners of four straight, including wins over Whitehall and Nazareth, with their defense pitching two shutouts in that streak of four.

The defense forced five Patriots turnovers, and amassed more than 300 rushing yards in defeating Freedom 41-7 last Friday night at Orefield Middle School.

"We got beat in every aspect of the game," said head coach Jason Roeder. "You don't...

Becahi looks to rebound

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

If there's one thing that you can say about Paul Abi-Daher, it's that he's not afraid to switch things up. Now he hopes his Bethlehem Catholic volleyball can flip the switch on a week before the Lehigh Valley Conference volleyball playoffs kick off.

The Golden Hawks (12-3,10-2) will be back at full strength this week as they gear up fore the postseason, following a short stint where Abi-Daher chose to rest some of his top players in preparation for the postseason.

LHS field hockey makes first LVC playoff

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

It'll be another notch in Liberty's field hockey belt this week when they take part in the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs, but what will it mean in the end?

Hopefully for the Hurricanes, it means another step toward chasing a championship this season.

The 'Canes (12-5-1) took on Northampton in yesterday's LVC semifinals, which are past our Press deadlines, but Mary Kathryn Omdahl's side hopes they can reach their first ever conference championship after making their first...

Pete's Top-10: Steady

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 by PETER CAR in Sports

As the season continues to dwindle down to its final weeks, it still doesn't feel like things are settled with the big boys of the Lehigh Valley Conference. The top four teams in the poll appear to only real contenders for the district crown, but Parkland's emerging dominance appears to be superior of anyone around.

On the flip side, Catasauqua is riding their way into a possible undefeated season, while Stroudsburg jumps back into the poll because there's nobody else worthy of a spot...
