Deer and motor vehicles a deadly mix

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by BUD COLE Special to The Press in Focus

Most outdoors-oriented individuals have accidently startled a white-tailed deer from its bedding or feeding area while he or she is out hiking or participating in other Keystone State outdoors activities.

If you did not see the deer fleeing from sight, you've probably seen the deer's white tail flashing in the distance. The tail is raised and waved as a deer runs and the tail is also flashed by the deer as a warning when danger is sensed.

Pity poor 'Anna Karenina'

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by PAUL WILLISTEIN in Focus

"Anna Karenina" is a gorgeous mess the famous Tolstoy character and the new film version of the novel.

Director Joe Wright, who previously directed the historical romantic dramas, "Pride and Prejudice" (2005) and "Atonement" (2007), also starring Keira Knightley, who plays the title character, Anna Karenina, reached for opera and instead got soap opera.

Wright apparently made a conscious effort to not be repetitive of other critically-acclaimed movie versions of the Leo Tolstoy classic (published in installments 1873 - 1877).

Celtic Tenors' concert is Irish and more

Wednesday, December 12, 2012 by KATRINA WEHR Special to The Press in Focus

If you think the Celtic Tenors' musical specialty is relegated only to Irish Celtic music, think again.

James Nelson, one third of the three-man group from Ireland, says a typical Celtic Tenors' performance includes everything from opera music to Bob Dylan covers.

"It's a bit of a cliché," he says, "but there really is something in our music for everybody."

RDT, Allentown Symphony return with live 'Nutcracker'

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by JENNIFER McKEEVER Special to The Press in Focus

During the holiday season, there are several "Nutcracker" ballets to choose from in the Lehigh Valley.

However, the 26th annual Repertory Dance Theatre (RDT) "Nutcracker," 2 p.m. Dec. 8 and 9, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown, is the only one with a live orchestra.

The Allentown Symphony, conducted by Associate Conductor Ron Demkee, again performs the Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky "Nutcracker" score. The dancers must listen closely to the orchestra and watch the conductor to execute this most famous score.

'Follies' fulfilled

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by KATRINA WEHR Special to The Press in Focus

Touchstone Theatre makes good on its promise of vaudevillian holiday hijinks with "Christmas City Follies XIII," which continues through Dec. 22.

Directed by "Follies" veteran Jp Jordan, the side-splitting show kicked off opening night, Nov. 30, with Touchstone Ensemble apprentices Gary Warren and Kyle Lewis as carolers singing a literal interpretation of the holiday classic "Deck the Halls," which involves beating fellow cast members with "boughs of holly."
